How to Achieve Complexion Perfection

institut_dermed_skin_analysisWith so many treatment options, selecting a facial can sometimes feel like a tricky task. That’s where Institut’ DERMed has you covered. Choosing the right skin care products for healthy skin is not a one size fits all. At Institut' DERMed we provide a skin anlaysis consultation with your facial to choose the right products for your individual skin type and condition.

This highly informative advanced skin analysis consultation is provided by our professional staff with the desire to perform a thorough skin assessment and help you acquire a greater understanding into your skin condition and skin type. Proper skin assessment is the core of any successful treatment – and its accuracy is truly the foundation of achieving complexion perfection.

We classify can classify specific skin conditions and skin type for customized treatment. The Fitzpatrick Scale is a skin typing test that was developed in 1975 by Thomas B. Fitzpatrick as a way to estimate the response of different types of skin to ultraviolet (UV) light. For example: Type I is highly sun-sensitive, always burns, never tans, whereas Type IV is not sun-sensitive, rarely burns and always tans.

The Glogau Classification for Aging objectively measures the severity of wrinkles and photoaging (the premature aging of the skin due to UV exposure), this ranges from Level I (mild) to Level IV (severe).

The Rubin’s Classification for photo-damage assesses pigmentation, keratosis and also skin texture.

And, finally, the Kligman’s scale for acne classification takes into account various factors such as type of acne, severity of acne, number of acne lesions and scarring among other measures. All of these assessments will help to determine your best treatment protocol as well as the likelihood of your treatment results and ongoing challenges that may arise.

Our skin care professionals will then select the Fundamental Level 101 facial that is just right for your skin type and condition to get you started with conditioning your skin and achieving your desired results. All Fundamental treatments consist of a double cleanse, exfoliating peel, extractions, corrective treatment serum and mask and relaxing upper body accupressure massage.

The Level 101 Clarifying Infusion Facial is best suited for oily/acneic skin types:
Aimed at oily congested acneic skin this facial is infused with the pore purging, oil controlling ingredients necessary to clarify skin for a confidently clear complexion.

The Level 101 Brightening Infusion Facial is best suited for dark spots and uneven skin tone:
Aimed at reducing the appearance of mild skin discoloration this facial treatment is packed with the lightening ingredients necessary for creating an even toned, brighter complexion.

The Level 101 Soothing Infusion Facial is best suited for sensitive skin types:
Aimed at easily irritated, dry and dehydrated or oily sensitive skin this facial treatment is infused with the redness relieving ingredients necessary for a relaxed comfortable complexion.

The Level 101 Renewing Infusion Facial is best suited for mature and dehydrated skin types:
Aimed at fine lines and wrinkles this facial treatment is infused with the vitamins, minerals, enzymes and proteins necessary for creating a firm and smoother, rejuvenated complexion.

With the product ingredients specifically selected for your skin type and condition you will soon experience what our clients fondly term the "Dermed Glow".

Say Goodbye to Winter Skin

InstitutDermed blog ExfoliationHeading into Spring there may still be some unexpectedly cooler temperatures here and there, but the evenings are starting to stay brighter longer and the days noticeably more sunny. Early Spring is the perfect time to say goodbye to dry, winter skin and prepare your face and body for spending more time outdoors.

Exfoliation is the process of removing dry, damaged skin cells from the surface of the skin; Exfoliation helps to increase skin regeneration, boost elasticity and create a smoothness (minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles). Natural aging may be unavoidable but exfoliation contributes to “healthy skin aging” by delaying or preventing the visible appearance of skin aging. Strengthening your skin’s ability to retain moisture is the key to youthful looking skin.

The more hydrated your skin is, the more youthful it will look and moisturizing on top of a layer of dead dry skin buildup won't accomplish much. Dry winter skin can also just feel itchy and uncomfortable and clog pores leading to more breakouts if you are acne prone.

Using both a topical and a physical exfoliant in a skin care regime will keep those dead, dry skin cells at bay. An exfoliating scrub such as the Enhancing Micro Crystal Polish with corundum crystals and jojoba beads and an exfoliating peel such as the Brightening peel with Lactic Acid will also break up pigmented areas, sloughing off those damaged skin cells to help even the skin tone and brighten for a gorgeous healthy glow.

In clinic this is a great time of the year to add on a professional peel, a microdermabrasion or a dermaplaning to your regular facial treatment. Spring is here - get your Dermed glow on!

How Collagen Rejuvenation Treatments Work

Collagen rejuvenating treatments are based on the principle that the skin has a natural abilitiy to repair itself whenever it is subjected to any kind of physical damage.  Immediately after an injury such as a cut, burn or an abrasion our body goes into a healing response and part of that response mechanism is to produce new collagen and elastin fibers.

Collagen is the main protein found in our bones, muscles and tendons.  It makes up 75 percent of our skin forming the scaffold that strenthens our connective tissue. There are several different types of collagen but two types in particular, Type I and Type III Collagen, are responsible for the majority of our skin’s regeneration.  When the skin is injured Type III Collagen begins the healing process and is followed in the later stages of wound repair by Type I Collagen, which is stronger and more resilient.

As children, our skin is rich with Type III Collagen. This is why a child's skin is soft and supple, enabling it to repair very quickly when injured. As we enter adulthood production of Type III Collagen slows and the production of Type I Collagen begins to increase. Type I Collagen continues to build until we reach the age of around thirty-five and then starts to decrease.

This is when true aging begins. Existing collagen degrades and the formation of new collagen decreases.  Due to this reduction in collagen our skin becomes thinner and less elastic, pore size increases, facial spider veins and sun damage become more apparent, fine lines begin to appear, wrinkles become deeper and our skin loses its natural youthful radiance. These issues then become steadily worse as time progresses.

Collagen production can, however, be stimulated with what we call a controlled injury.  When the face is cut, for example, Type I and Type III Collagen are released to repair the wound. This is the body’s normal wound-healing response.  It is this normal wound-healing response that treatments such as Micro-Needling, RadioFrequency, IPL and Clinical Peels are based on to naturally increase the production of collagen in the skin.

With the presence of new collagen the skin’s condition begins to improve.  It becomes plumper and suppler, wrinkles and scars diminish,  skin tightens,  uneven skin texture is smoothed, pore size appears smaller, and blemishes fade. With each treatment more new collagen is produced and the overall quality of the skin continues to improve.

What are the after effects?

Topicals for home skin care maintenance are recommended to extend results and of course to continue to protect the collagen you have.

Vital A Serum contains L-Retinol that helps to promote collagen production and slow down the loss of elastin in skin tissue. The exfoliation effect of Vital A Serum also removes the dead skin cell layers and improves acne as well.

Vital C Serum (ascorbic acid) is essential for the synthesis of collagen.  In fact collagen cannot be built without vitamin C and its antioxidant properties make it a vital ingredient for skin health.  Studies have shown that maximal absorption in the skin is achieved with a 20% vitamin C solution. Although not a suncscreen Vitamin C is also recommended for it's antioxidant activity that limits the damage caused by UV exposure.

New technology and products come out every day promising the secrets to the fountain of youth, so it’s vital to do your research and know what each treatment does in order to make an educated decision on the right products and procedures when treating age related skin conditions especially for collagen compromised skin. True anti-aging treatments (in order to be worth their weight) must stimulate collagen production, in order to make skin look plump, smooth and young again.

Many clinical skin care specialists believe that some degree of laser resurfacing or deep chemical peels are the most effective treatment for collagen stimulation to reverse the signs of aging. While we can attest to some remarkable results with those treatments we are also big advocate of a skin rejuvenation technique called Micro Needling as a healthy collagen boosting alternative.

First what exactly is Micro Needling?

The principle of skin needling is to stimulate the body’s own production of collagen. Dermal Micro Needling involves the use of a sterile roller comprised of a series of fine, sharp needles to puncture the skin or a needling pen. The needling device is rolled or stamped over the surface of the skin to create many microscopic channels deep into the dermis of the skin, which stimulates your own body to produce new collagen.

This treatment improves your skin by inducing the increased production of collagen, facilitating natural repair and growth, making the skin stronger and thicker. The new collagen can fill depressed scars and wrinkles from the bottom up lifting the depression area so that it becomes level with the surrounding skin. This process takes 2-3 months to produce visible results and can also help thicken thinner fine skin types.

Micro Needling has several advantages over other collagen boosting alternatives. The most important one is that the epidermis, the surface layer of the skin that is your natural skin protection barrier, remains intact! While the channels created by the needling in the epidermis have closed within hours, underneath a new collagen-structure is starting to form.

Micro Needling has been used successfully to treat fine lines, wrinkles, lax and sun-damaged skin; to reduce the appearance of stretch marks; to improve acne ice pick scars; and to induce hair re-growth. It has also been used to tighten skin. The advantages of this procedure are that the skin becomes thicker with more than a great increase in collagen deposition.

Micro Needling is a treatment to deliver results. You may feel some pressure and a slight prickling as the needles roll over the treatment area. In medical needling cases a topical anesthetic is applied prior to your procedure so there is minimal discomfort. After treatment your skin may exhibit a mild redness, which can last a few hours and the skin may be slightly sensitive. To protect and soothe the skin, enhancing protective cream is recommended for the first 24 to 48 hours as a home care regimen.

After a treatment mineral makeup may be used on the treated area face after 48 hours, though just keeping the skin moist often looks better and assists in faster healing time. It is important to protect the new skin from the sun by using a broad spectrum sunscreen daily.

Our expert aestheticians have reduced acne scarring, wrinkles and blemishes with micro-needling. If you would like to learn more about the procedure and what results you can expect stop by Institut' DERMed Spa in Buckhead for a complimentary consultation.

High Tech Treatments

Welcome to the age of high tech treatments!

Radio-Frequency Facial & Body Treatment  is one of the innovative high tech facial treatments for skin tightening.

WHAT IS IT? A non invasive skin tightening technique used on the face and the body, that can be applied to all skin types. Radiofrequency (RF) treatments use the tissue's resistance to turn the RF energy into thermal energy. Radiofrequency (RF) are a nonablative treatment meaning the RF does not damage the epidermis (outer skin layer) in any way. The radio frequency energy (or light energy) heats the deeper skin layers during the treatment to boost collagen remodeling and production of new collagen.
