New technology and products come out every day promising the secrets to the fountain of youth, so it’s vital to do your research and know what each treatment does in order to make an educated decision on the right products and procedures when treating age related skin conditions especially for collagen compromised skin. True anti-aging treatments (in order to be worth their weight) must stimulate collagen production, in order to make skin look plump, smooth and young again.

Many clinical skin care specialists believe that some degree of laser resurfacing or deep chemical peels are the most effective treatment for collagen stimulation to reverse the signs of aging. While we can attest to some remarkable results with those treatments we are also big advocate of a skin rejuvenation technique called Micro Needling as a healthy collagen boosting alternative.

First what exactly is Micro Needling?

The principle of skin needling is to stimulate the body’s own production of collagen. Dermal Micro Needling involves the use of a sterile roller comprised of a series of fine, sharp needles to puncture the skin or a needling pen. The needling device is rolled or stamped over the surface of the skin to create many microscopic channels deep into the dermis of the skin, which stimulates your own body to produce new collagen.

This treatment improves your skin by inducing the increased production of collagen, facilitating natural repair and growth, making the skin stronger and thicker. The new collagen can fill depressed scars and wrinkles from the bottom up lifting the depression area so that it becomes level with the surrounding skin. This process takes 2-3 months to produce visible results and can also help thicken thinner fine skin types.

Micro Needling has several advantages over other collagen boosting alternatives. The most important one is that the epidermis, the surface layer of the skin that is your natural skin protection barrier, remains intact! While the channels created by the needling in the epidermis have closed within hours, underneath a new collagen-structure is starting to form.

Micro Needling has been used successfully to treat fine lines, wrinkles, lax and sun-damaged skin; to reduce the appearance of stretch marks; to improve acne ice pick scars; and to induce hair re-growth. It has also been used to tighten skin. The advantages of this procedure are that the skin becomes thicker with more than a great increase in collagen deposition.

Micro Needling is a treatment to deliver results. You may feel some pressure and a slight prickling as the needles roll over the treatment area. In medical needling cases a topical anesthetic is applied prior to your procedure so there is minimal discomfort. After treatment your skin may exhibit a mild redness, which can last a few hours and the skin may be slightly sensitive. To protect and soothe the skin, enhancing protective cream is recommended for the first 24 to 48 hours as a home care regimen.

After a treatment mineral makeup may be used on the treated area face after 48 hours, though just keeping the skin moist often looks better and assists in faster healing time. It is important to protect the new skin from the sun by using a broad spectrum sunscreen daily.

Our expert aestheticians have reduced acne scarring, wrinkles and blemishes with micro-needling. If you would like to learn more about the procedure and what results you can expect stop by Institut' DERMed Spa in Buckhead for a complimentary consultation.

You can do a full body exfoliation and hydration treatment at home once a week. Your skin will glow all over and blemishes and discolored imperfections will be reduced.

What you will need:
1.Institut’ DERMed Enhancing Glycolic Body Wash
2.Institut' DERMed Enhancing Glycolic Body Lotion
3.Institut' DERMed Enhancing Lactic Hand and Body Lotion
4.Institut' DERMedEnhancing Neck and Décolleté Cream.

The Institut DERMed Enhancing line are all the products that extend and enhance treatments and contain the aesthetic compliments to medicinals. These products incorporate nutrients shown to protect and improve the skin’s appearance.

How it works:

For Weekly Maintenance

The Glycolic Body Wash is actually a mild body peel. As well as exfoliating, glycolic acid also boosts collagen and helps rejuvenate the skin by encouraging the shedding of old and sun-damaged, surface skin cells. It helps acne conditions on the chest and the back. It improves skin tone and helps reduce the appearance of dark skin spots.

The Glycolic Body Lotion contains glycolic acid and apricot kernel oil obtained from the kernels of apricots. It is a very light and gentle oil used in creams and lotions to balance, nourish, rehydrate and lubricate the skin.  It’s rich in gamma linoleic acid to maintain moisture balance and vitamin A and E, which soothe the skin and slow signs of aging.
The nourishing properties of apricot kernel seed oil have an anti-inflammatory effect and is especially useful for oily complexions and light enough that it does not leave a greasy coat on your skin after use.

This combination of ingredients means that dead skin cells are gently removed from dry skin and the right level of moisture is maintained.

For Daily Maintenance:
The Enhancing Lactic Hand and Body Lotion is a powerhouse product  and very popular in our colder climates, particularly in the winter. Lactic acid is a naturally occurring humectant for the skin with a certain affinity for water molecules to help keep skin hydrated and evens skin tone due to its whitening properties.
By encouraging natural skin cell renewal through mild exfoliation while delivering intense hydration to the skin at the same time, you can imagine this lotion creates a soft, smooth texture you'll love.

The Enhancing Neck & Décolleté Cream contains the key ingredients Lactic Acid and Rose hip seed oil.  Rose hip seed oil is a powerful anti-aging tool, extracted from the seeds of a wild rose bush in the southern Andes. The oil contains pro-vitamin A (beta-Carotene). (While the Roe Hip fruit is rich in vitamin C, the oil does not contain any) and can treat a variety of skin conditions, it is excellent for mature skin as well as helping to diminish photo-aging. It quickly absorbs into the skin replenishing moisture and creates a protective barrier on the skin to help prevent dehydration. This is one of our favorite treatments for the décolleté and in areas where people are baring their upper body.

Fall is here. Smells of cinnamon and spice in the air, kids dressing up for Halloween...and an abundance of Pumpkins!

Pumpkin contains enzymes, vitamin A, C and K, iron, zinc and so many antioxidants it’s no wonder it’s considered one of nature’s healthiest foods. Those ingredients are also what puts Pumpkin at the top of our list for skin rejuvenation.

For years, scientists, dermatologists and skin care professionals have searched for a way to make the skin look younger. This age old search for the proverbial “Fountain of Youth” leads us to this naturally occurring exfoliator which provides a gentle, superficial skin peeling.

How do Pumpkin Enzymes Work?

When Pumpkin Enzymes are applied to the skin in the form of home care products and professional peels, the plant enzymes soften and break down the hard sebum and dead skin cells that build up in the hair follicle trapping the dirt and oil. By exfoliating the dead cells on the surface of the skin we encourage cell turnover at a healthy rate, this keeps your complexion feeling and looking smooth and radiant.

Is A Pumpkin Enzyme Peel Safe?

Not only is a Pumpkin Enzyme Peel safe but the antioxidant boost derived from pumpkin neutralizes free radicals {unstable molecules responsible for tissue damage that leads to aging} before they can cause any damage. If left unchallenged free radicals cause the cells to function poorly or die leading to damaged skin structures.  There are little to no side effects with a Pumpkin Enzyme Peel when used as directed.

How Should I use It?

There are two ways to treat the skin with Pumpkin Enzymes: home care products and professional peels. Home care peels containing pumpkin enzymes may be used once a week or  following your skin care specialists  recommended use. Professional peels are recommended bi-weekly or once a month depending on your particular skin condition.

Why Should I Use It?

Corneocyte cohesion (dead skin cells) are associated with many of today’s common skin conditions such as acne, photo damage (environmental aging), and hyper-pigmentation (brown spots). Pumpkin Enzymes are a wonderful resurfacing agent that can lighten hyper-pigmentation, help to clear acne and boost antioxidants for anti-aging resulting in smoothing, firming and improving signs of pre-mature aging.

What Results Should I See?

When Pumpkin Enzymes dissolve layers of dead skin cells, the skin appears smoother, firmer and has a more translucent clarity.

At What Age Is A Pumpkin Enzyme Peel Usually Recommended?

Pumpkin Enzymes are safe to use on young adults skin, especially acne prone skin, and is recommended for maintaining health skin from the teens on.

Get your skin ready for the colder months with one of Mother Nature’s most beneficial ingredients.

Lighten Up

hyperpigmentationPigmentation problems result from an uneven distribution of melanin over the skins surface. Pigmented lesions are caused by abnormal melanocyte production located in the basal layer of the epidermis. Melanocyte cells absorb ultraviolet radiation in order to protect cellular DNA. Over exposure to sun light, hormonal imbalance or an injury response can stimulate melanocyte cell production in order to protect our skin and this can cause discolored, pigmented lesions. The rate of melanin production varies from person to person. There is no cure for hyperpigmentation but is possible to improve the condition by fading the appearance of the discoloration.

The four major causes of hyperpigmentation are:
•    sun exposure
•    genetics
•    hormones
•    Inflammation

The sun is most often to blame for skin discoloration and premature aging and the total effects of sun damage may not be realized for years. Suntans and sunburns from early years may have very negative consequences later in life. Skin cancer is the most serious effect of sun damage and the reason we highly recommend avoiding direct sun between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. and applying sunscreen 30 minutes prior to exposure for optimal anti-aging sun protection.

It’s difficult to avoid sun exposure in the summer months and the effects of it can be seen in hyperpigmentation. That's why it's a good idea to visit your professional skin care therapist as summer ends and fall begins to address reversing the signs of summer sun damage.

There are a number of topical solutions for treating hyper-pigmentation. Product ingredients that are Tyrosinase Inhibitors (Tyrosinase is a copper-containing enzyme present in plant and animal tissues that catalyzes the production of melanin. It is found inside melanosomes) assist in preventing an overproduction of pigment:
•    Hydroquinone, dramatically diminishes the appearance of stubborn hyperpigmentation.
•    Vitamin c (ascorbic acid) is a photo protecting agent.
•    Chromanyl palmitate slows down melanocyte cell activity and prevents the over-production of pigment. Can be used as an alternative to  hydroquinone.
•    Licorice extract slows down melanocyte cell activity and improves the appearance of uneven skin tone.

"What You See In The Mirror Is In Your Control."

For home care Institut' DERMed has created a brightening product system with glycolic, lactic, salicylic, and ascorbic and kojic acids, licorice extract and a moisturizer that contains continuing sun protective ingredients: Micronized Titanium Dioxide and Oxybenzone.

Institut' DERMed Brightening Treatment Kit

Exfoliating enzymes, acids, chemical peels, dermaplaning and microdermabrasion help to remove existing abnormal pigmented cells and lift and lighten darker lesions.

Retinol+ Peel

•    Retinol or even Retinoids are a derivative of Vitamin A. They are a nutrient that feeds the reticulum skin cell and it signals that cell to divide. The greater number of new skin cells the more old skin cells are pushed off the surface of the skin.  Retinol works as a powerful antioxidant for the skin as well as really revs up the rate of cell renewal. This is beneficial for aging skin and for photo-damaged skin. The Retinol+ peel is a deep cell exfoliation that will remove the dead skin cells that make the skin look dull,  lift hyperpigmentation and soften and smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

Glycolic+ Peel

•    Glycolic acid works in the skin to dissolve the lipid glue between the cells to slough off dead cell matter at an accelerated rate. Glycolic Acid also lightens the skin and helps increase collagen production. The Glycolic+ peel is recommended to correct and prevent blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, pustules,  control oil and is also a super star anti-aging ingredient that does the heavy lifting revealing smoother, brighter, younger looking skin.

Lactic+ Peel

•    This is a really good choice of peel for first-time Level 201 peel users or for those with sensitive skin. Formulated with Phenylethyl Resorcinol (Symwhite® 377) a natural skin-brightening compound, tyrosinase inhibitor and antioxidant. It is a highly efficient skin lightener that brightens the skin tone and treats uneven skin tone.
