Moisturizing Strategies for Fall and Winter

idermed moisturizing strategiesMoisturizing Strategies for Fall and Winter

As we transition from Fall into Winter our skin can be difficult to deal with. Products that just yesterday were working great for your complexion just don't seem as effective today. Anyone with sensitive skin prone to irritation can find that their skin can erupt overnight. This is also true for oily/acne prone skin types. For some, the colder months can be helpful in that your skin will be less oily, but on the other hand a buildup of dead skin cells can create congestion leading to breakouts and a very dull complexion.

Exfoliation is necessary for both oily and dry skin types in winter. It removes the dead skin and allows serums and hydration to penetrate. Conditioning your skin once a month with a professional facial treatment using cosmeceutical organic acids such as glycolic, lactic and salicylic will work to break down oils (lipids) in the skin allowing for accelerated cell shedding. Adding a topically applied skin exfoliator to your home care regimen, such as the Institut' DERMed Enhancing Micro Crystal Polish that contains corundum crystals and jojoba beads will polish away dead skin cells and when used once a week will provide a mild exfoliation without risk of over exfoliating. After any exfoliation follow with a serum and moisturizer recommended for your skin type to restore the epidermal barrier for maximum hydration and protection.

Tips for avoiding dry and dull Winter skin

1. Wash with a creamy cleanser like the Institut’ DERMed Enhancing Creamy Cleanser with Milk Proteins to remove makeup, dirt and oil without stripping skin of precious oils that bond water to the cells. Always use tepid water and a soft wash cloth to remove cleansers.

2. Balance your skin’s pH after cleansing with a corrective toner to hydrate and prepare your skin for better penetration of your serum and moisturizer.

3. Cosmeceutical ingredients treat and hydrate skin. The Institut’ DERMed Anti-Oxidant Peptide Serum with Spin Trap Proteins bond nutrient rich water to the skin and provide the first layer of hydration and protection for dry skin types. For oily skin types the Institut' DERMed Totarol Serum formulated with Totarol Extract and Tea Tree Oil is a much gentler alternative to benzoyl peroxide in the winter months and will help you to maintain a clear, clean complexion.

4. The Institut’ DERMed Renewing Moisturizer will provide maximum skin protection for those with dry skin, protecting against environmental aggressions and softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. For excessively oily skin types the Clarifying Moisturizer with plant derived Squalene Oil and Tea Tree Oil will restore the skin's ideal moisture balance while maintaining a clear complexion.

5. Keep some intensive moisturizing cream on hand such as the Enhancing Protective Cream for the face, and the Enhanching Lactic Hand and Body Lotion for the body to handle those problematic areas whenever necessary, especially if you live in a very harsh winter climate.

What Pumpkin Enzymes Can Do For You

idermed pumpkinFruit and vegetable enzymes are proteins with the ability to target and break down dead skin cells. When used in skin care products, the enzymes speed up chemical reactions on the skin's surface, increasing skin cell turnover to reveal healthy, glowing skin. The enzymes take the place of manual exfoliation with an added bonus: they're also full of antioxidants! Pumpkin enzymes naturally contain vitamin A, making them the most effective enzyme for refining the skin's surface. This miracle enzyme helps to treat fine lines and wrinkles as well as to combat oily acne breakouts.

Skin care products that achieve this "healthy glow" without the downtime are available for home-care as well as professional use. Five minutes at home is all you need to transform your skin with the Institut Dermed Clarifying Peel. Formulated with oil controlling Pumpkin Enzymes and L-Lactic Acid this weekly treatment accelerates the release of dead cell build-up, fades the appearance of skin discoloration, decongests clogged pores and helps to prevent the appearance of blemishes for a clear, clean complexion. Contains 5% Pumpkin Enzymes.

For professional use, the Institut Dermed Pumpkin Peel facial treatment combines enzymes and fruit acids to accelerate exfoliation without the oxidative and free radical stress associated with most peels. The mild retinoic acid benefit helps the exfoliation process and this peel is also packed with Vitamin C, an antioxidant to strengthen your skin’s defenses and prevent the signs of aging. The Pumpkin Peel treatment takes approximately 30 minutes. There's no downtime with this peel which makes it an excellent lunchtime treatment.Contains 15% Pumpkin Enzymes. For Professional Use Only.

Undo Summer Sun Exposure

institut_dermed_sun_damage

The sun is most often to blame for skin discoloration and premature aging and the total effects of sun damage may not be realized for years. Suntans and sunburns from early years may have very negative consequences later in life. It’s difficult to avoid sun exposure in the summer months and the effects of it can be seen in dark spots, uneven skin color and patchy hyperpigmentation.

UV induced hyperpigmentation from overexposure to the sun and tanning beds can cause an acute inflammation, known as erythema, and the subsequent overproduction of melanin results in an uneven distribution of pigment over the skins surface presenting as freckles and actinic keratosis.

It is absolutely possible to diminish the effects of too much summer sun and brighten, lift and fade skin discoloration. A series of professional peels that brighten the skin such as the Institut' DERMed Micro Lifting Peel - which contains a beautiful cocktail of non-irritating ingredients: Ascorbic Acid, Malic Acid, Papain Enzyme and Salicylic Acid, will slough off those dead unsightly skin cells and brighten and even the skin tone and texture. Regular exfoliation treatments will help to remove skin cells contianing abnormal amounts of pigment as well as help to prevent re-occuring hyperpigmentation.

Home care maintenance is a necessity to continue any results achieved from your professional treatment. A corrective serum such as the Institut' DERMed Chromabright Serum (chosen as a “Hot Product Pick” from the editors of American Spa Magazine), is a revolutionary hydroquinone-free serum formulated with Chromanyl Palmitate to lift and brighten dark spots and Glycolic Acid to even the skin tone and renew the skin’s surface for a radiant, luminous complexion. The Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil in the formulation provides a natural source of Vitamin C for skin conditioning and the Hexylresorcinol not only brightens but also protects the skin against environmental stressors.

As always daily sun protection is a must!

How to Achieve Complexion Perfection

institut_dermed_skin_analysisWith so many treatment options, selecting a facial can sometimes feel like a tricky task. That’s where Institut’ DERMed has you covered. Choosing the right skin care products for healthy skin is not a one size fits all. At Institut' DERMed we provide a skin anlaysis consultation with your facial to choose the right products for your individual skin type and condition.

This highly informative advanced skin analysis consultation is provided by our professional staff with the desire to perform a thorough skin assessment and help you acquire a greater understanding into your skin condition and skin type. Proper skin assessment is the core of any successful treatment – and its accuracy is truly the foundation of achieving complexion perfection.

We classify can classify specific skin conditions and skin type for customized treatment. The Fitzpatrick Scale is a skin typing test that was developed in 1975 by Thomas B. Fitzpatrick as a way to estimate the response of different types of skin to ultraviolet (UV) light. For example: Type I is highly sun-sensitive, always burns, never tans, whereas Type IV is not sun-sensitive, rarely burns and always tans.

The Glogau Classification for Aging objectively measures the severity of wrinkles and photoaging (the premature aging of the skin due to UV exposure), this ranges from Level I (mild) to Level IV (severe).

The Rubin’s Classification for photo-damage assesses pigmentation, keratosis and also skin texture.

And, finally, the Kligman’s scale for acne classification takes into account various factors such as type of acne, severity of acne, number of acne lesions and scarring among other measures. All of these assessments will help to determine your best treatment protocol as well as the likelihood of your treatment results and ongoing challenges that may arise.

Our skin care professionals will then select the Fundamental Level 101 facial that is just right for your skin type and condition to get you started with conditioning your skin and achieving your desired results. All Fundamental treatments consist of a double cleanse, exfoliating peel, extractions, corrective treatment serum and mask and relaxing upper body accupressure massage.

The Level 101 Clarifying Infusion Facial is best suited for oily/acneic skin types:
Aimed at oily congested acneic skin this facial is infused with the pore purging, oil controlling ingredients necessary to clarify skin for a confidently clear complexion.

The Level 101 Brightening Infusion Facial is best suited for dark spots and uneven skin tone:
Aimed at reducing the appearance of mild skin discoloration this facial treatment is packed with the lightening ingredients necessary for creating an even toned, brighter complexion.

The Level 101 Soothing Infusion Facial is best suited for sensitive skin types:
Aimed at easily irritated, dry and dehydrated or oily sensitive skin this facial treatment is infused with the redness relieving ingredients necessary for a relaxed comfortable complexion.

The Level 101 Renewing Infusion Facial is best suited for mature and dehydrated skin types:
Aimed at fine lines and wrinkles this facial treatment is infused with the vitamins, minerals, enzymes and proteins necessary for creating a firm and smoother, rejuvenated complexion.

With the product ingredients specifically selected for your skin type and condition you will soon experience what our clients fondly term the "Dermed Glow".

Acne Education Month

acne education month institut dermed
Acne Education Month

Acne usually appears in the teenage years, but some people begin to have acne in their 20's or 30's and sometimes Acne is a skin condition that stays for a long time! There are several reasons for acne: an increased production of sebum from sebaceous glands, abnormal increase of cornification in the hair follicle, proliferation of P. acne bacteria, genetic reasons and inflammatory reactions.

There are also several types of Acne - which are classified in grades from 1 to 4:

Whiteheads: stay under the surface of the skin. (Grade 1)
Blackheads: oxidized sebum trapped in the pores. (Grade 1)
Papules: small pink bumps that can be tender. (Grade1-2)
Pustules: red bumps at the bottom with pus on the top.(Grade 3)
Nodules: large painful solid pimples deep in the skin.(Grade 3-4)
Cysts: deep painful pus-filled pimples can cause scars.(Grade 4)

Acne affects approximately 17 million people and is the most dermatologic condition treated by physicians and estheticians within the United States. Be Aware - Protect your Skin

sun protection institut dermedPhoto-aging is often the first sign that your skin has been damaged from sun exposure. Brown spots, known as hyper-pigmentation can be caused by UVA & UVB light. After years of sun exposure these dark spots begin to rear their ugly heads on our faces, hands and body.

Reducing these signs of sun damage can also reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. Many of the treatments for photoaging not only restore a more youthful appearance, but also reduce the risk for developing precancers.

Targeting dark spots that often result from over exposure to sunlight is best achieved with regular treatments containing active ingredients such as those contained in the Institut’ DERMed Brightening Product category.

Regular facial treatments can be a tool in the fight against skin cancer. Research has shown that peels, along with other facial-resurfacing techniques, may help reduce the presence of skin lesions and precancerous conditions that can develop into skin cancers..

Treatment Spotlight - Fundamental Level 101 Brightening Facial

After a superficial cleanse to remove make up the Brightening treatment begins with a corrective cleanse using the Institut' DERMed Brightening Skin Cleanser – An aromatic foaming gel treatment cleanser formulated with Kojic acid designed to initiate the brightening process.  This deep cleanse of the skin helps to prepare for the application of the corrective products that will exfoliate and even the skin tone.

After the cleanse we apply the Institut' DERMed Brightening Skin Toner – A potent anti-oxidant treatment toner formulated with L-ascorbic acid, L-glutathione enzyme and Spin Trap molecules to help protect the skin against environmental stressors and free radical reactions by rapidly releasing skin cells as well as dissolving oil.

We then apply the Institut’ DERMed Enhancing Micro Crystal Polish, a highly effective exfoliater formulated with Diamond Corundum Crystals and Jojoba Beads to polish away dead skin cells, improve overall texture and refine pores in preparation for the Brightening Peel.

The Institut' DERMed Brightening Peel is formulated with 10% -Lactic Acid to increase cellular exfoliation, brighten and re-texturize the skin. The Pearl Powder in this formula is rich in micro-nutrient anti-oxidants helping to protect against environmental damage and improve the rate of cell renewal.

Our prize winning (Dermascope Aestheticians choice award) Institut' DERMed Brightening Mask is an excellent post peel treatment as it is very hydrating as well as brightening and helps to fade stubborn uneven skin tone. Formulated with Licorice Root Extract and SymWhite®77 to rapidly improve the appearance of dark spots and uneven, patchy skin.

An application of Institut' DERMed Vital C Serum – formulated with L-ascorbic acid, DHEA-ascorbic and calcium ascorbic then helps to increase skin firmness and create a more youthful appearance.

Always complete this and any other facial treatment with an application of Brightening Moisturizer,  a light weight SPF15 - all in one Micronized Titanium Dioxide, Oxybenzone and Sodium PCA moisturizer for daily use to hydrate and protect.

When we are dealing with skin that has been over exposed to the sun very often we are dealing with more than one issue, and this regimen is ideal for promoting overall healthy skin.

Say Goodbye to Winter Skin

InstitutDermed blog ExfoliationHeading into Spring there may still be some unexpectedly cooler temperatures here and there, but the evenings are starting to stay brighter longer and the days noticeably more sunny. Early Spring is the perfect time to say goodbye to dry, winter skin and prepare your face and body for spending more time outdoors.

Exfoliation is the process of removing dry, damaged skin cells from the surface of the skin; Exfoliation helps to increase skin regeneration, boost elasticity and create a smoothness (minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles). Natural aging may be unavoidable but exfoliation contributes to “healthy skin aging” by delaying or preventing the visible appearance of skin aging. Strengthening your skin’s ability to retain moisture is the key to youthful looking skin.

The more hydrated your skin is, the more youthful it will look and moisturizing on top of a layer of dead dry skin buildup won't accomplish much. Dry winter skin can also just feel itchy and uncomfortable and clog pores leading to more breakouts if you are acne prone.

Using both a topical and a physical exfoliant in a skin care regime will keep those dead, dry skin cells at bay. An exfoliating scrub such as the Enhancing Micro Crystal Polish with corundum crystals and jojoba beads and an exfoliating peel such as the Brightening peel with Lactic Acid will also break up pigmented areas, sloughing off those damaged skin cells to help even the skin tone and brighten for a gorgeous healthy glow.

In clinic this is a great time of the year to add on a professional peel, a microdermabrasion or a dermaplaning to your regular facial treatment. Spring is here - get your Dermed glow on!
