A Machine that Spots Skin Cancer

Melanoma, one of the most common types of cancer, affects thousands of Americans each year.  However, if caught early, it is usually completely curable.  With a new piece of equipment called MelaFind, your dermatologist may now be able to more accurately detect and diagnose melanoma.

So how does it work?

MelaFind works by emitting 10 different wavelengths of light 2.5 millimeters below the skin’s surface, much deeper than the human eye can see.  Once the device picks up melanoma on the skin, it compares it against a database of thousands of skin lesions and immediately assesses it, determining if a biopsy is needed.  As of right now, MelaFind is awaiting FDA approval.
