As you age, your skin starts to thin, lose its elasticity (ability to bounce back from a stretch) and fat cells underneath the skin begin to shrink making your skin more susceptible to damage, sagging and wrinkles.
The number one and most damaging factor to the skin is the sun. Sun accounts for about 90% of photo aging symptoms. Ultraviolet radiation penetrates the layers of the skin causing the damage that leads to wrinkles. What most people don’t realize is that the bulk of these effects actually occur by the age of 20 depending on genetic disposition.
The Fitzpatrick Skin Type skin classification system was developed in 1975 for skin care experts to measure that disposition and sensitivity to sun exposure. Skin Types range from the very fair (Type I) to the very dark (Type VI). People with skin types in the “I” and “II” range are at highest risk for photo aging.
|Skin Type||Tanning History|
|I||Always burns, never tans, sensitive to sun exposure|
|II||Burns easily, tans minimally|
|III||Burns moderately, tans gradually to light brown|
|IV||Burns minimally, always tans well to moderately brown|
|V||Rarely burns, tans profusely to dark|
|VI||Never burns, deeply pigmented, least sensitive|
There are many treatment choices available for treating fine lines and wrinkles caused by sun damage. Exfoliation with peels can achieve significant results. Peels remove the dead skin cells and stimulate collagen and elastin production. Peels range from superficial to medium to deep in exfoliating depth.
Enzyme peels are considered superficial. Acids such as Glycolic and Lactic are medium depth and Chemical peels go deep. The deeper the peel the longer the skin will take to heal. A deep peel can take the skin 7-10 days to heal.
Herbal peels are enzyme peels that gently hydrolyze and dissolve dead cells that accumulate on the skin’s surface, opening up blocked pores and rejuvenating the skin.
A Pumpkin Peel is also an enzyme peel but also provides a mild retinoic acid benefit, accelerating exfoliation, lightening hyperpigmentation and detoxifying congested skin.
Lactic Acid Peels work as an excellent alternative to stronger exfoliators like Glycolic and Salicylic Acid to remove dead skin cells without disrupting the natural moisturizing factor (NMF) of the skin. Lactic Acid is a natural alpha hydroxyl acid found in milk and is used as a gentle exfoliating agent to rejuvenate sensitive skin types. The signature Institut' DERMed Lactic + Peel solution is blended within a unique system of anti-oxidants and skin brightening peptides to effectively exfoliate and promote a healthy hydrated, renewed skin surface.
Glycolic Peels are Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) peels, powerful keratolytic exfoliating agents used to correct abnormal epidermal keratinization in the pilosebaceous unit. Glycolic Acid Polymer is a compound of molecules that are linked together for more effective penetration through the skin layers. Glycolic Acid has the smallest molecular size, which allows it to penetrate and be absorbed by the epidermis more quickly than all of the other AHA Acids.
Jessner's peels are chemical peels and some visible flaking and peeling may be seen from this peel depending on the number of layers applied and the individual skin type. The long term results are well worth it. The Institut’ DERMed Classic Lifting peel and Perfect Lifting Peel are medium epidermal Jessner's like peels combining AHA and BHA Acids, lighteners and potent anti-oxidants to provide enhanced exfoliation and increased efficacy of each individual ingredient for a rejuvenated glowing complexion.
TCA is a deep exfoliating Trichloroacetic Acid peel solution used to accelerate epidermal cell renewal and protein synthesis fine lines and winkles. TCA peels are also excellent for fading post inflammatory pigmentation due to photo-aging and acne, and restoring healthy tone and texture. The signature Institut' DERMed Supreme Lifting Peel solution is formulated with a unique blend of potent anti-oxidants and peptides to provide enhanced exfoliation and increased efficacy of each individual ingredient. This intensive peel procedure is recommended for non-sensitive photo damaged, lax skin conditions and effectively resolves uneven skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles and removes sun damaged for a smooth glowing complexion. TCA can be used for face, neck and hand areas for complete rejuvenation of the face and body.
Any peel that goes deeper than a superficial exfoliation should only be applied by a professional skin care specialist to avoid complications.
